Miu Miu celebrated its latest "Women's Tales" short film with a premiere and dinner in Shanghai, marking the continuation of its acclaimed series spotlighting women's stories.
This edition, the 27th in the series, titled "I AM THE BEAUTY OF YOUR BEAUTY, I AM THE FEAR OF YOUR FEAR," was directed by Malaysian filmmaker Tan Chui Mui, born in Kuantan, Malaysia, in 1978, has previously won numerous awards for her debut "Love Conquers All" and her feature "Barbarian Invasion" took home the Jury Grand Prize at the 24th Shanghai International Film Festival. Her project "Just Because You Pressed the Shutter?" clinched the 2022 Jimei x Arles Discovery Award.
Tan's short film for Miu Miu, described as a journey of a Chinese girl in Malaysia finding herself, delves deep into self-exploration. The narrative weaves through an ancient myth shared by an elderly flower seller about Kali, the goddess associated with time and transformation, illustrating the journey to self-discovery through confronting one's fears.
The premiere attracted notable figures from film, fashion, and culture. A highlight was a special discussion with Tan and other distinguished guests exploring themes from the film.
The following day, the festival continued with talks on personal and feminine narratives in modern storytelling, streamed live for a broader audience. Additionally, a special screening showcased all 27 films from the "Women's Tales" series, sharing diverse and intricate stories of women, directed by a cadre of talented female directors, to over 300 attendees, including local students.
